There are three types of thermal fuses commonly used: organic type thermal fuse, porcelain tube type thermal fuse and shell type thermal fuse.
 
Organic fuse consists of movable contact, spring and melt. Before the temperature fuse starts, the current flows from the left lead to the movable contact and through the metal shell to the right lead. When the external temperature reaches a predetermined temperature, the melt of organic matter can melt and compress the spring. The movable contact opened by the spring is separated from the left lead. When the circuit is opened, the current between the movable contact and the left lead is cut off.
 
Porcelain type temperature fuse is composed of axisymmetric leads, fusible alloy melted at specified temperature, special mixture to prevent melting and oxidation, and insulated porcelain tube. When the ambient temperature rises, the specific resin mixture begins to liquefy, and when the melting point is reached, with the help of the resin mixture (increasing the surface tension of the molten alloy), the molten alloy rapidly shrinks into a sphere with the lead wires at both ends as the center under the action of surface tension, thus permanently cutting off the circuit.
 
Shell temperature fuse consists of two pins connected to an easily fusible gold wire, and special resin covers the easily fusible gold wire, so that current can flow from one pin to the other. When the temperature around the temperature fuse rises to its operating temperature, the fusible alloy melts and shrinks into a ball with the help of surface tension and special resin, and adheres to the ends of the two pins. In this way, the circuit will be cut off permanently.
