What are the common characteristics between TVS tube and ESD electrostatic protection tube?

TVS tube (transient voltage suppressor) and ESD electrostatic protection tube have many common characteristics. The following is a detailed introduction for you:
The working principle is the same: both are based on the avalanche breakdown or Zener breakdown principle of semiconductor materials. Under normal voltage, they are all in a high impedance state and have almost no impact on the circuit. When an instantaneous overvoltage occurs in a circuit, such as electrostatic discharge, electrical fast transient (EFT), and the voltage at both ends exceeds the breakdown voltage, it will quickly transition from a high impedance state to a low impedance state, providing a low impedance path to guide the large current generated by the overvoltage to ground, thereby protecting the subsequent circuit from the impact of high voltage. After the transient voltage ends, it will automatically return to the high resistance state.
Fast response speed: TVS tubes and ESD electrostatic protection tubes can respond to overvoltage pulses in a very short time. The response time of TVS tubes can reach nanoseconds, while the response speed of ESD electrostatic protection tubes is even faster, with some products having a response time of less than 1ns. This fast response capability allows them to function in a timely manner during transient events such as electrostatic discharge, effectively protecting electronic components.
Consistent protection function: Their core goal is to protect electronic circuits from transient voltage damage. Both TVS tubes and ESD static protection tubes can limit overvoltage within a safe range, avoiding damage to sensitive electronic components due to excessive voltage and ensuring the normal operation of the circuit.
There is overlap in application scenarios: both have wide applications in interface protection of electronic devices. For example, USB interfaces, HDMI interfaces, etc. can be protected using TVS tubes or ESD static protection tubes. In addition, they are often used for overvoltage protection of circuits in fields such as computer systems, communication equipment, and automotive electronics.
Parameter indicators related: Some of the main parameters of the two have similarities. For example, both have breakdown voltages (breakdown voltage V (BR) for TVS tubes and breakdown voltage Vbr for ESD diodes), and when the voltage exceeds these values, the device begins to conduct; There is also a maximum clamping voltage (the maximum clamping voltage VC of TVS tube and the clamping voltage Vc of ESD), which will clamp the voltage within this safe level when overvoltage occurs. And in order to meet the IEC61000-4-2 international standard, both TVS tubes and ESD diodes must be able to handle a minimum of 8kV (contact electrostatic voltage) and 15kV (air electrostatic voltage) impact.
