How much voltage is considered a high-voltage capacitor?

The voltage definition of high-voltage capacitors is not absolutely uniform, but dynamically divided according to application fields, dielectric types, and industry standards. The following are the classification standards and technical basis for the three major scenarios of integrated power systems, industrial electronics, and basic circuits:
1、 Power system field: 10kV and above
Definition basis:
National standard: The Verification Regulations for High Voltage Standard Capacitors (JJG) clearly define capacitors with a rated voltage ≥ 10kV as high-voltage capacitors, and their electrodes need to be designed with shielding structures, with a voltage coefficient of 10 ⁻⁵.
Typical products:
Parallel capacitors: such as BFM11 series (11kV) and BAM19 series (19kV), used for reactive power compensation;
Standard capacitors: voltage coverage of 10kV~1200kV, loss factor requirement ≤ 5 × 10 ⁻⁵.
Insulation requirements:
10kV capacitors need to withstand 42kV power frequency voltage/75kV lightning impulse voltage.
2、 Industrial electronics field: 630V~10kV
Definition basis:
Industry convention: Medium and high voltage equipment (such as frequency converters and inverters) classify 630V~10kV capacitors as high voltage capacitors and require strengthened insulation and heat dissipation design.
Typical applications:
DC support capacitor: 630V~1200V thin film capacitor for photovoltaic inverters (such as DC Link capacitor);
Filter capacitor: 400V~800V electrolytic capacitor in industrial power supply (such as 450V aluminum electrolysis).
Performance requirements:
Tolerate 1.3 times the rated current ripple, with an overvoltage capability of 1.15V ᵣ (V ᵣ ≤ 315V).
3、 Basic electronics field: 100V~630V
Definition basis:
Component standards: In the field of surface mount capacitors and electrolytic capacitors, capacitors with a rated voltage greater than 100V are considered high-voltage capacitors.

4、 Boundary expansion for special scenarios
Electrolytic capacitor subdivision:
In aluminum electrolytic capacitors, voltage greater than 100V is referred to as "high voltage", but in the field of power, voltage greater than 1kV is only classified as high voltage.
Trend towards miniaturization:
Surface mounted ceramic capacitors break through 2kV (such as 0402 packaging), blurring the traditional voltage grading boundaries.

General definition: 100V or above can be referred to as a high-voltage capacitor (in the field of basic electronics);
Strictly defined:
Power system: ≥ 10kV;
Industrial power electronics: ≥ 630V;
Consumer electronics: ≥ 100V.
Selection tip: In actual design, a voltage margin (1.5~2 times the working voltage) needs to be reserved, and additional derating is required for high temperature environments.
